I recommend that you use a PC or laptop to access the Zoom website with a high-speed LAN connection (60-90 Mbps), as some WiFi connections (30 Mbps) will have a time-lapse in video and audio. I do not recommend that you access the Zoom website with a phone or tablet as you will have limited interaction options.

If you are in a noisy office, I recommend that you use 3.5mm connected headphones to the laptop’s 3.5mm port, or a USB connected headset with a built-in microphone. This will give you better sound quality and allow everyone to clearly hear each other by reducing background noise.

As you continue adding more electrical gadgets to your desktop educational studio, you will start to run out of USB ports and electric outlets. To resolve the need for USB data access, you will need to get a USB data hub that will allow you to plug in the USB headset, printer, external web camera, external hard drive, or anything else that needs to send and receive data to your PC or laptop. All of these devices will need electricity, so you will need one or two electrical power strips, preferably with USB power outlets, as some devices like the LED ring light do not need to send data, but are powered by USB.

If your microphone icon is red then you are muted and cannot be heard, as well, if your video icon is red then you cannot be seen by the other participants. However, these audio and video settings are very easy to change and customize.

The ‘Share Screen’ button at the bottom of your screen allows you to share your Zoom screen. If you click the up arrow, it will open a window where you can choose from any open software to share with the group. If you are having problems with any of the Zoom settings, you can easily share your Zoom screen and I can verbally walk you through the settings.

At the bottom of your Zoom screen, you will see a large microphone icon. Please click on the up arrow next to the microphone icon. A small window will open where you can select your preferred microphone and speaker, as well as test the microphone and speaker.

As well, your brand of laptop may have volume controls on the top row of Function Keys. For example on my Dell laptop, the F1 key will mute or unmute the speaker sound, F2 lowers the speaker volume, and F3 increases the speaker volume.

What educators need for teaching on Zoom?
I have experience teaching ESL classes with Skype, Line, Google Meets, MS Teams, and Zoom. Of these video-conferencing platforms, I have listed them in order of effectiveness in my opinion. Honestly, the Zoom platform is intimidating for a new user, but I can guarantee that the investment to learn it grants the teacher much greater control over the online classroom environment. From the ability to mute all the students and divide the group into pairs with breakout rooms, to using virtual backgrounds, saving the group Whiteboard as a PNG image file, and recording the lesson as a MP4 video file. In my humble opinion, Zoom is the Ferrari of video-conferencing platforms.
One of the amazing aspects of Zoom is that you can sign-up for a free account that has all of the premium features for you to practice using the platform before you start teaching. However, the free account has a limit of 40 minutes for a group meeting. The Zoom platform has a lot of customizing settings that need to be fully understood to optimize your teaching effectiveness. I highly recommend that watch these YouTube tutorial videos and spend some quality time practicing with a friend or fellow teacher. I would also recommend that you download the Zoom app onto your smartphone, so your phone can join your Zoom meeting; this can allow you practice alone, and experiment with the settings. In example, when I play audio files from my laptop’s iTunes, it comes through my laptop’s speakers and not my headset (not sure why), but my phone is receiving the audio because I have activated the ‘share computer sounds’ in the advanced share settings.
